Gearing 716k

Post by Joeri » Tue Jul 16, 2019 6:52 pm

Hi
Well here it goes...i own a 716k p80 "89 civil ....now i have changed the 6 cyl for the 5 cyl tdi and the strange thing is That it seems my top speed has gone down.....110 km/u at 5000 rpms.......i think with the 6 cyl it did 125 km/u at 4800 rpms ? I have keept the original gearbox, hi/ lo case, and the rest....my axles have been overhauled together with the hi/lo case .
Now is there been deferend gearings in the 716k ( axles , hi/lo case , finel drives ?)
The engine runs great ,smooth whitout smoking black ...comes from a Volvo v70 310nm 140hp.
so what could be the thing That i've mist?

If all is Like it should be i have been thinking on adding a laycock overdrive unit behind the zf4hp22 .....it is not for the high speed but i want my rpms lower....the torq is there so i dont think That would be a problem?

I see your problem the drive train on Pinzgauer are all the same on the diesel models. I don't know about the petrol models

However there are 3 versions of the transfer box

1/ Version from P80

2/ Later version (same ratio as 1) used in most pinzgauers

3/ Low ratio version used in SOME 6x6 Auto (MOD & Malaysian 6 cylinder 6x6)

The 5 cylinders all use version 2, regardless of 4x4 or 6x6

So unless the transfer box has been changed to version 3 it should be fine.

If he can get any numbers off the plate on the box I can confirm,

This version 1 (7161230010) so its an early / standard version (not the low ratio version)

Note year 1987, its from a very early P80

Hi...this can be so as my 716k has vin number 0000009 and was a test truck at steyr puch in Grazz for 4 or 5 years....it was first brought on the road in 1989.
So the hi/lo case is still original ...thats good news , the diffs have been rebuild so i guess everything there is original to.
Only thing left could be the final drives but i think That there were no diferent gearings availeble .
The only Things left would be the gearbox, i have a spare one from a Volvo 760 ..mechanicle zf4hp22....mybe i swap them and see what That brings

Hi yes it is the D5252T engine....came out a '99 Volvo v70 , runs great , before with the 6 cyl it was Like he had to pose a bit when shifting thro the gears ( thinking what to do after shifting) . Now it shifts one after the other without even hesitating....puls from 0 up to the fourth gears as smooth as butter. Only Things is when going to the 100 km/U ( 115 km/u) the rpm gauge says its doing
4500 (4800) rpms.....i find That way to high ...i mean there is plenty of torq there so i just need to find a way to bring That down, lets say 3500rpms......would make it a bit more feul efficiënt

Right Ive had my thinking cap on and I assume yours is an automatic gearbox if so what torque converter did you use.

If it was the converter from the 6 cylinder engine that would be your problem I would say.

The other thing I would check out is the turbo. Smaller vane turbo will give you quicker acceleration but low down top speed.

Torqconvertor and automatic is the original pinz ...the one That was on the 6 cyl. So i just changed the engine al what comes after That is still original pinzgauer. The turbo is the original That was on the Volvo 5 cyl tdi...its a FGT not a VGT so notting diferend there...the only Thing i have changed on the engine is the fuelpump....as the Volvo normal uses a electronic controlled fuelpump an for me electronics and pinzgauers dont mix....(just dousnt make sense  ) So i had my pump rebuild so it dousnt need electronics....it is what they call a MTDI ( Mechanicle Turbo Direct Injection)....there is room for more power but then it will start to smoke black when hitting the trottle
